BAP and Summer Adventures

Bilingual Afterschool Program (BAP) staff and students begin tai chi to start off their program. These subtle, yet powerful movements have been an impactful way to calm minds, ease worries, and center in preparation for the rest of their afternoon together. Heritage martial arts, crafts, games, and Kitchen Medicine are integrated throughout the year. Tutoring in Cantonese and Mandarin is also provided to our students. During the school year, BAP is in session from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 2:00 PM start time on Wednesdays to accommodate the neighborhood school’s early-out day.

Summer Adventures (BYP) will be in session for six weeks from June 12 – July 21, 2023. Our program will offer academic, enrichment, and heritage programming from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday – Friday, with additional supervised recreation and care from 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM. Chinese dragon dancing, lion dancing, cooking, and arts are offered during program times. All programs will be based at Cameron House in Chinatown.

Beginning March 8th, 2023, priority enrollment will be open to our current BAP students and 2022 summer participants, with our summer waitlist opening on February 13th. We have limited capacity again this summer. We apologize to our many Cameron House families that we are unable to provide a program for everyone this summer, but hope your child’s summer experience will still be awesome! SUPERVISION, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND CARE

Summer Adventures is overseen by the Out of School Time Programs Director. We hire experienced and passionate youth workers as our teachers and teaching assistants, who oversee the activities and care of each classroom. For afternoon extended care, heritage activities are led by our Summer Heritage Apprentices, who are high schoolers trained and supervised by our Heritage Specialist. These high school apprentices are amazing young people who are dedicated to providing quality experiences for our youth participants while developing their own leadership and youth work skills!

Program Hours & Fees

Summer Adventures (BYP) runs six weeks from June 12 – July 21, Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM. Afternoon extended care runs from 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM.

Our 2023 program fee is $1,000 for the full six weeks. This is a full 6-week program, without a weekly registration option. Our program will be closed June 19 and July 3 – 4 in observance of the Juneteenth and 4th of July holidays. Financial assistance is available.

Our fee for all six weeks of afternoon extended care from 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM is a $100.00 flat fee, with no financial assistance available.

At Cameron House, our goal is to provide any child or youth the opportunity to benefit from our programs. From the generous donations of our alumni and funding from the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF) we are able to offer need-based financial assistance to participants of our summer programs. With verification of income through a valid Medi-cal card (BIC), or other appropriate documentation, the summer fee would be $450.00 for all six weeks, with an additional $100.00 for afternoon extended care.

SUMMER 2022 UPDATE

Seven weeks of Summer Adventures culminated in a July 20th Summer Showcase of 1st – 8th-grade students, our high school-aged Heritage School Apprentices, and staff performing Chinese dragon dancing, martial arts, and fun class plays, highlighting the culture and fun they were experiencing each day in our programs. Check out the video of the showcase!

Dragon Dance

One of the most exciting activities we offer is the awe-inspiring dragon dance. It’s one of the fantastic enrichments we can offer thanks to our spacious yards and experienced Kei Lun Martial Arts instructors. The dragon dance we teach places a heavy emphasis on responsibility, hard work, listening, and team-building. A great way for your child to learn about culture and discipline in energetic performance art.

Lion Dance

Our traditional lion dance activities place a greater emphasis on the deeper cultural aspects of the storytelling and puzzle-solving form of the art, versus the different acrobatic forms of the dance commonly seen. Kids will learn many facets of Chinese cultural symbolism, history, and literature from a performer/researcher. They may not even realize they’re learning about these subjects because they’ll be having so much fun!

Martial Arts / Taiji

It’s no secret that these arts require focus and perseverance. They foster discipline, courage under pressure, patience, and calmness during practice. The goal, of course, is to take these skills outside and beyond the lessons into their everyday lives in school, at home, and into the future. The skill of teaching a yard full of rambunctious elementary school children to quietly practice moves called The Single Whip and The Needle at the Bottom of the Sea is something worth bottling and selling!

Cultural Handicrafts and Arts

Children will explore various traditional arts, including the techniques used to make lion heads and masks for the lion dance, basic toy and jewelry crafting, calligraphy, etc.
