Ed Chin

Born in Chinatown and grew up in the Mission, Ed has many fond memories from his years participating and serving at Cameron House as Daycamp and Best Day of the Week leader and director among other experiences such as being part of the Agape College-age Fellowship; coordinating back pack trips and learning from leaders too numerous to name, about social activism and Asian American advocacy, such as for housing, immigrant rights, and even playgrounds and parks for Chinatown. Ed credits much of who he is to his years at Cameron House (CH) where he developed character, values, leadership skills, and experienced a community of caring and love. “Yet will I rejoice,” from the book of Habakkuk found on the stained-glass window going up the stairs of the 2nd floor at CH, remains one of the memorable verses that guide Ed’s outlook in life. Inspired by his experience with youth at CH, Ed worked in the SFUSD (Everett Middle School and Commodore Stockton/Gordon Lau Elementary) as a bilingual paraprofessional for 6 years before entering a career with the Federal government. Ed was introduced to working for the Social Security Administration, through a recommendation by Sunny Hee (Jon Hee’s mom), who was a social worker with the Christian Service Department (Social Services), where he worked for 40 years, with 34 years in supervisory and management positions, retiring as the Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Processing Center Operations. Ed credits his experiences at Cameron House for developing servant leadership and executive core competencies, such as skills in conflict resolution, active listening, developing others, team building, accountability, problem solving, flexibility, resilience, etc. Through Cameron House and having experienced “faith in action”, Ed is a member of the Presbyterian Church in Chinatown, where he is serving as an elder and chairing the Mission and Evangelism Committee. Ed lives with his family in San Francisco. He enjoys going out with friends and enjoys martial arts practice and sight-seeing. Ed is returning to serve as a board member supporting Cameron House’s faith in action and mission, as Jesus had called us to do in Matthew 25, in serving the Chinatown community.
