Light the Night

Light the Night is inspired by Night Strike, a program in Portland, OR, that distributes food to people who are homeless and utilizes that opportunity to spark conversations. Many of our young people who participated during a trip to Oregon had amazing stories to bring home and wanted to share that positive energy with the Cameron House community. Light the Night is an outreach program that encourages interaction and care for our local homeless community.

The purpose of Light the Night is to inspire folks to be involved, provide a listening ear, and show compassion.  We plan to dispatch groups of volunteers with care packages throughout  downtown to distribute to people without homes. Each handmade care package contains basic necessities such as socks, a sandwich, and a warm drink. This also enables members to initiate conversations, showing love and compassion to our community.

We look for monthly volunteers and other alumni to participate. We prepare the care packages for people without homes and distribute them to those in need nearby. After handing out a care package, we encourage participants to converse with recipients to show them that they matter. We hope the program will be a sustainable young adult-led program in Cameron House and for it to raise awareness of social issues our communities face.

Currently, we aim to have a Light the Night outing with the youth of the Friday Night Club program on the 1st Friday of each month and a public Light the Night outing open to all community members on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Check the calendar below for updates!
