Helping One Another Remain Steady

We started the New Year with laughter and ice, on Thursday January 12th, when 28 BAP students and 12 adults (parents, YM staff, and chaperones) enjoyed a lively night of ice skating at Union Square.

For all of the parents, this was their first time ice skating; they were willing to give it a try – and spent a lot of time clinging to the side rails – because their kids asked them! It was a great change of pace for them to spend time with their kids, laughing, having fun, and letting their kids lead them. Some youth from another program came up to our staff and asked for help balancing on the ice, so we were glad to hold their small hands, as well.

One of our staff members, Raymond (our BAP 3rd/4th grade teacher), was new to ice skating; but he didn’t let that daunt him. He got in the rink and was an instant hit. Although many of our kids wanted to skate with him, he didn’t feel steady enough, so he held on to the side rail and started screaming “AHHHHHHHHHH” as he made his way around the rink, amusing the kids and parents! Although we stayed for only an hour and a half, everyone had a wonderful time creating a memorable night. This fun event was made possible thanks to Trudy and Terry Lee in honor of Leona Friesenborg.
