Cameron House Welcomes Back Alumni Steve Hung!

Can you identify the people in this photo and the year it was taken?

It’s been an almost 20-year hiatus from Cameron House for Steve Hung. He is very excited to be back “home” and in a capacity that he loves – coaching basketball. Coach Steve, as he is commonly referred to these days, will be coaching the Cameron House ACBA (Asian Community Basketball Association) team this upcoming season.

Coach Steve started at Cameron House (CH) as a third-grade day camper and graduated from the Friday Night Club program. He spent many Friday nights playing basketball on the famed upper deck and is very excited to be passing the torch to the new generation of CH Ballers.

His experience includes being an Assistant Men’s Varsity Basketball Coach at International High School (IHS), where he was part of a brand new coaching staff brought in to turn around a program with a win-loss record of 4-23. In their first year together, IHS finished with an overall record of 19-8, which included going undefeated in league play (please see photo above; Coach Steve is in the blue shirt)! His experience also includes being Head Coach for several youth teams throughout the City.

Coach Steve firmly believes in developing and honing his skills. He’s an avid student of the PGC/Glazier Coaching Clinics, where the focus is on learning to teach the modern game of basketball in addition to teaching important life lessons to players. He has also attended several Nike coaching clinics across the country.

His main mantra is “Championship Culture,” which is not just about winning championships. It’s about knowing that “You cannot always control the OUTCOME, but you can always control your OUTPUT (or effort).” This mantra applies both on and off the court!

Off the court, Coach Steve has spent the last 19 years at Charles Schwab Investment Mgmt., Inc. as a Senior Portfolio Manager, where he manages mutual funds and ETFs focused on corporate bonds. He loves spending time with his family and is very thankful to his wife, Jackie, and sons, Xander and Reese, for allowing him to pursue his passion as a basketball coach.
